Thinking is important right?
But, a great deal of our thinking is useless... worrying about this and that, catastrophising about 'possible future events' that might never happen.
We don't leave all the lights on in our house all the time do we? We switch them off... but switching off our thoughts is so much more difficult.
We can, however, use conscious thought... focus, for example, on how it feels to place your hand over your heart and feel the warmth of your hand on your skin, or how the clothing feels that you are wearing, feeling your breath... is it cool or warm? is your hand light or heavy?
We have many ways to switch off... even the choice to discover techniques for switching off can be helpful to combat the mind and prevent us from spiralling and ruminating.
